Blind bets

In poker, blind bets and antes are required bets placed before the flop. The ante is a small amount of money placed by one player or group to make the game more intense and profitable. An ante is most often the first blind of a level and increases as the pot grows. In this way, the blinds and antes are not only used to help the table keep the action moving, but they also play an important role in tournament play.

Gutshot

In poker, the gutshot is a straight draw that requires a particular rank. For instance, if you are holding the gutshot hand Q 8 2 on the flop, you can expect to make a flush on the turn, but if you do not make it by the river, you will likely be out of luck. Fortunately, there are some things you can do to improve your gutshot straight draw. You should always check flop odds before calling a large bet, and you should fold smaller bets when you think you might be out of luck.

Side pots

Aside from the main pot, sidepots are used to keep track of players. In a typical poker game, players form sets of five cards, called hands, which have a rank, or value, in the poker world. Each hand is compared against all other hands in a showdown. The player with the highest hand, or the aggressor, shows their hand first. Then, other players may make bets, and the remaining players will raise or call their bets.

Poker hands

In most poker games, the best poker hand is composed of five cards. A pair is two cards of the same rank, and a flush is a pair of ace and king. If more than one player has a pair, the tie-breaker is the next highest card in the hand. In split-pot games, the best low hand wins half of the pot. For example, 7-6-4-3-A beats 7-6-5-3-A but loses to 7-4-3-2-A.

Betting intervals

In poker, the length of betting intervals varies between games. The first player in a round places a bet and the other players raise their bets in proportion to the total contribution of the player before them. Each betting round ends with a “showdown,” at which the winning player is determined by the amount of chips still in the pot after each round of betting. This betting interval length varies by poker game type.
