GRANT WRITING WORKSHOPS

The Best Practices Project is sponsoring the Embarrassingly Basic Grant-Writing series specifically designed to meet the needs of Texas charter schools. The training supports the very beginner in proposal submission, with each workshop building on previously learned skills. The three workshop series will take place on January 23, February 6 and February 20, 2004, from 8:30 - 5:00 pm at the Blackland Research and Extension Center in Temple, Texas. Space is limited to 40 participants and the registration deadline is December 12. CEU credit is available. The training series will also be available through the Texas Video-Conferencing Network. Contact Mary DeWalt at mdewalt@rapoportacademy.com for further information.

AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEXAS SCHOOL HEALTH The 2003/04 Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health is underway. The award application is available on-line at the Texas Department of Health (TDH) Adolescent and School Health Program website: www.tdh.state.tx.us/schoolhealth/awards.htm. The Awards for Excellence is a unique opportunity for Texas charter schools to win a cash award and statewide recognition for their program or initiative to promote the health of students and/or staff.
This year there are three types of awards:

  • Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health - cash awards ($1000 to $1500 each) for eight schools that have implemented programs to address health needs of students and/or staff. Schools/districts compete with other schools/districts of similar enrollment size for these awards.

  • Scholarships for the school health advisory councils (SHACs) of two deserving school districts to attend the All Well Institute.

  • This year the Texas Pediatric Society Foundation has added three more cash awards (each for $1000). These awards are for schools that have implemented effective programs to promote nutrition, physical activity and reduce obesity-related diseases among adolescents.

If your school has a health program or initiative in place, we encourage you to apply for one of these awards. There is no cost to apply. The deadline for submitting applications is Friday, March 19, 2004.

Awards for Excellence is administered by the TDH Adolescent and School Health Program, and sponsored by the Texas Health Foundation. We are dedicated to rewarding schools that demonstrate an on-going commitment to preventive health practices among students, staff, and school/community collaboration.
