TEXAS
CHARTER SCHOOL CONFERENCE

THE SEVENTH ANNUAL TEXAS CHARTER SCHOOL CONFERENCE will be May 5 & 6, 2003 at the Renaissance Hotel in Austin. Confirmed keynote speakers include Dr. Howard Fuller, Institute for the Transformation of Learning, and Dr. Felipe Alanis, Commissioner of Education. This year we ask that you mail, not fax, the registration form(s) with your check to the Resource Center. Conference information and registration forms are attached.

Our registration table will be open on Sunday, May 4th from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. To avoid long lines on Monday morning, please make plans to check-in and receive your conference materials on Sunday evening. A continental breakfast will be served each morning at 8:00 a.m. and the General Session will begin at 9:00 a.m. each day.

We expect almost 1,000 attendees, so please call 512-343-2626 to make your hotel room reservations. To receive the $125 room rate with up to four people in a room, let them know you are with the Charter School Conference.

VIRTUAL PILOT RESOURCE The Texas Education Agency established the investigating Quality of Internet Courses (IQ) Project to develop a set of guidelines to provide assurance to Texas schools that Internet-based courses meeting these guidelines are of the highest quality. These guidelines cover a wide range of components exhibited by quality courses including:

  • Course design for the online environment
  • Accurate, current, and error free content
  • Instructional strategies aligned with learning objectives
  • Documentation of course effectiveness
  • Availability of support services
  • Financial considerations

Reports on courses that have been evaluated against the guidelines and have met or exceeded criteria have been made available by Region IV at www.iqstandards.info/default.htm in order to assist school administrators, parents, and students in making purchasing and enrollment decisions.

THE CHARTER SCHOOLS DIVISION AT TEA would like to thank charter school staff members responsible for submitting expansion amendment requests for helping the process to move smoothly this spring. We've received many requests and will be working to answer them as quickly as possible. Please feel free to call Kirsten Christophersen at 512-463-9575 at any time to check on the progress of your amendment request.
