CHARTER SCHOOL CONFERENCE

SIXTH ANNUAL TEXAS CHARTER SCHOOL CONFERENCE will be held on Monday and Tuesday, April 29 & 30, 2002 at the Moody Gardens Hotel in Galveston. We expect over 700 attendees this year so please call the Moody Gardens Hotel at 888-388-8484 for room reservations as soon as possible. Let the hotel know you are with the Charter School Conference to qualify for the $125 rate, which can accommodate up to four people in one room for $125. Conference information and registration forms are attached.

CHARTER EVALUATION The legislation that created open-enrollment charter schools in Texas requires that the schools be evaluated every year. For the fifth year this evaluation is carried out for the Texas Education Agency by teams from the Texas Center for Education Research, the University of North Texas, the University of Texas at Arlington, and the University of Houston. A part of the evaluation is a survey of charter school parents. In order to conduct the survey, the evaluators need charter school rosters with student phone numbers. Dr. Gregory Weiher of the University of Houston will be contacting you in the near future about acquiring your school rosters.

Charter school directors should be aware that the charter school evaluation mandated under Texas statute does not constitute a compliance review of open-enrollment charter schools. Evaluators do not examine whether charter schools fulfill their missions or whether they comply with the terms of their charters. The role of the evaluation team is to prepare an annual report about Texas open-enrollment charter schools as a group.
