CHILD COUNT DEADLINE FOR NEW CHARTERS Monday, October 22, 2001 is the deadline for the submission of the Special Child Count. There are no extensions. This special child count, which drives special ed entitlements, must be submitted at http://www.barton.tea.state.tx.us/websas. The charter's county-district number and authorization code are key to this process. For assistance, call Debbie Conaway at 512-463-9362.

COMMISSIONER NELSON LETTER Recent events remind us that now is the time to review school safety plans. A letter from Commissioner Jim Nelson concerning school safety is attached.

OFFICIAL EMAIL ADDRESS REQUIRED Earlier this week, you should have received a substantial packet from the Charter Schools Division at TEA. Many items in the packet require your careful attention, but one letter asked for your immediate attention. This letter, asking for you to respond with an official email address by Monday, October 22, is attached. If you have not done so, please respond by Monday.

CHARTER SCHOOL DATA REQUEST FORM DEADLINECharter schools opening for the first time on or before November 1, 2001 must submit a Charter School Data Request Form For Federal Funding by November 1, 2001 to the Division of Student Support if the charter wants its eligibility and tentative entitlements determined for Title I, Part A; Title II, Part B; Title IV; Title VI (Innovative); and Title VI (Class Size Reduction). The following new charters which are expected to open prior to November 1, need to submit the form. Contact Dina Hernandez at 512-463-9374 for information.

CHARTER SCHOOL ORIENTATION AGENDA UPDATE An updated agenda for the Charter School Orientation to be hosted by the Division of Charter Schools at TEA on Monday & Tuesday, October 22 & 23, 2001 is attached. There is no charge for the orientation. The sessions will run from 9:45 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. on October 22 and from 8:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. on October 23. To RSVP call 512-463-9575.

EDUCATION SERVICE CENTER DIRECTORY The Resource Center has compiled a directory of Education Service Center contact names and numbers. This information will help provide charter schools with key personnel who deal directly with charter school issues. See attachment.
