SUMMER WORKSHOPS will be hosted by the Resource Center in Dallas and Houston for all Texas charters. See attached for times and dates. The Math Workshops for grades K-2, 3-5 & 6-8 are two-day events. Please RSVP to the Resource Center at 210-348-7890. Babysitting services will not be provided. Please refrain from bringing any children or students to the workshops.

HEALTH INSURANCE HB 3343 requires that all charter schools must decide by September 1, 2001 whether or not they will participate in the new Texas Health Insurance program for the 2002-2003 school year. For information check online at www.tea.state.tx.us/school.finance/topics/index.html.

GED PROGRAMS HB1432 authorizes the state to continue in-school GED programs that meet certain conditions outlined in the bill. While further information on this will be coming from Dr. Robert Muller's office at TEA, charters should be aware as they plan budgets for 2001-2002 that funding will change next January. Funding will flow on the basis of contact hours.

$26 MILLION IN FEDERAL GRANT FUNDS The Resource Center will host a grantwriting workshop for detailed instructions on preparing proposals for the Federal Repair and Renovation Grant funds (RFA#701-01-027) that will be available on a competitive basis for Texas charters and ISD's. The workshop will be on Wednesday, August 29, 2001 from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at La Escuela Charter School, 2300 West Commerce, San Antonio. Training will be conducted by Susan Barnes, Senior Director of the TEA Charter Schools Division, Ms. Esther Murguia, Education Specialist, and Christi Martin, Executive Director of the Association of Charter Educators. RSVP to the Resource Center by Friday, August 24 at 210- 348-7890. No cost for the workshop or lunch.

THE 2002 ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION ACCOUNTABILITY is now available on the TEA website. The deadline for registering to receive an alternative education accountability campus rating for 2002 is Friday, September 14, 2001. Other deadlines are listed on Page 40 of the manual.

STAKEHOLDER MEETINGS The Texas Education Agency will hold public meetings to provide information and receive public comments about agency rule-making resulting from HB 6. These public meetings are part of the effort to include stakeholder input in the rule-making process. Members of the public may fax written comments to 512-463-9732. Attendees should provide three copies of written comments. The meetings will be held in:
