Academic / Accountability Academies 2001 will be hosted by the Resource Center in Dallas and Houston for all Texas charters. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided each day. The workshops and meals are free of charge. See attached for times, dates, and registration form. All charter school administrators and teachers are encouraged to attend the Reading, Math, and Classroom Management Workshops. The Math Workshops for grades K-2, 3-5 & 6-8 are two-day events. Please RSVP to the Resource Center at 210-348-7890 or fax the attached registration form to 210-348-7899 by Tuesday, July 10th. Babysitting services will not be provided. Please refrain from bringing any children or students to the workshops.
SPECIAL EDUCATION FORMS The Education Service Center Region X
has produced a general education referral packet and a set of special education
forms. If you would like this information sent to your school please contact

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECKS Charter schools may have access to
Texas criminal databases and run background checks on potential employees through
the website, www.publicdata.com. Please check this website for more information
on costs and how to open an account. You may also check with your local
Education Service Center to see what services they provide concerning background checks.
REGION IV ESC Chas rescheduled their Charter School Administrator Series
in Special Education Summer 2001 Institute for July 23 - 26, 2001 at the
University Center at the University of Houston. For information call Dr.

TEA UPDATE
- T· 21 HOURS LEFT TO CLAIM IDEA B FUNDS
The following charter schools still have 2000-2001 IDEA-B Federal Funds available through
the WEB SAS automated system. The purpose of these funds is to support the provision of
special education and related services to students with disabilities being served under current
evaluations and individualized education programs (IEPs). The original deadline for receipt
of these applications/amendments was May 15, 2001, however, for those charter schools still
wishing to access these funds, individual consideration will be given to requests for processing of applications and amendments. The WEB SAS system used to apply for these funds can be
accessed through the web address: http://barton.tea.state.tx.us/websas. In addition, the Superintendent/CEO/Director will need to fax a letter of request to 512-463-9560
AND mail the letter of request with an original signature to the attention of Ms. Laura Taylor,
Division of Special Education, Texas Education Agency, 1701 North Congress Avenue, Austin,
TX 78701-1494. The letter should include a justification for submission of the application/
amendment after the May 15, 2001, deadline. Consideration for processing of the
application/amendment will be given on a case-by-case basis. The stamp-in date of the application
or amendment will reflect the date the letter of request is received in the Division of Special
Education, Texas Education Agency. NOTE: The deadline for receipt of both the faxed
letter of request with the original signature in the Division of Special Education and the
application/amendment certified to "L" status on the WEB SAS system is 2:00 p.m.,
Friday, June 29, 2001. The 2000-2001 IDEA-B Formula, Preschool, and Capacity Building
grants end on June 30, 2001. Funds approved on a 2000-2001 application must be spent only on costs incurred between the date the 2000-2001 application/letter of request is received
by the Division of Special Ed. in a substantially approvable form and the end date of the grant.

- ANNUAL REPORT ON STUDENT EXPULSION Charter schools
must submit the Annual Report on Student Expulsion (Gun-Free Schools
Report) through the automated web-based reporting system posted on
the Division of Student Support Programs website at www.tea.state.tx.us/
student.support/. Deadlines are posted on the site. For questions please
contact Fidel Alvarez in the Division of Student Support Programs at

- REPORTING FINAL EXPENDITURES Local Education Agencies,
including charter schools, are required to report Final Expenditures
using the WEB-ER to the Division of Student Support Programs.

- STAKEHOLDER MEETINGS The Texas Education Agency will hold
public meetings to provide information and receive public comments
about agency rule-making resulting from House Bill (HB) 6, 77th Texas
Legislature. These public meetings are part of the effort to include stakeholder
input in the rule-making process. The meetings will be held in the following
