PENALTY FOR LATE FILING OF FORM 990 As a 501(c)3 tax exempt organization charter schools must file a Form 990 by the 15th day of the 5th month after the organization's accounting period ends. A penalty of $20 to $50 a day, not to exceed the smaller of $50,000 of the gross receipts of the organization for the year, may be charged when a return is filed late. The penalty may also be charged if the organization files an incomplete return or furnishes incorrect information. Check with your attorney or tax accountant for further information.

The Resource Center has received numerous requests to conduct one more IOV Training. We will provide two boxes with 119 colored-coded indicator folders and sample documentation. Workshops and lunch are provided by the Charter School Resource Center at no cost to the charters.

MIGRANT STUDENTS We have had a number of requests for information concerning migrant students. Call Christina J. Villarreal at TEA at 512-463-9067 for information.

ARTS IN EDUCATION GRANT This U.S. Department of Education (ED) grant supports media literacy projects in schools. It is intended to support projects that enhance students' understanding of violence in media and encourage students to create nonviolent media projects. Eligibility is limited to LEAs in which at least one school has 75 percent of its students eligible for Title 1 assistance. Eight to 10 awards of $50,000 to $150,000 each will be made, for a total of $990,000. Deadline is August 21, 2000. Contact: Shelton Allen at (202) 260-2487.
