TEXAS CONFERENCE Don't forget the registration deadline for the Second Annual Texas Charter Conference is March 1st. (See attached) If you are driving into San Antonio, the Adam's Mark on the Riverwalk has a parking garage located at the corner of Soledad and Martin Street -- $8.00 per day. (Directions are attached) If you are flying in, it is cost effective to take a taxi to the hotel, which is only about five miles south of the airport. FYI -- last year we had to turn away 40 people because we maxed-out the hotel ballroom.

ACADEMY OF SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE Congratulations to Patty Thompson, Director of Second Generation ASK Charter in Tyler, for the generous contribution received this week from the Heath Foundation. ASK has 78 students in a delightful converted furniture gallery, and uses a variety of Direct Instruction curriculum models. More than 90% of the students are Special Needs children, yet in less than six months ASK has 100% of them reading, and an extensive waiting list. Congratulations - they are clearly East Texas pioneers! Many charters have requested a Teacher Feedback form. Attached is the one Patty Thompson developed for ASK.

TREETOPS INTERNATIONAL CHARTER Thank you Chris Kallstrom, Director of Treetops, for hosting the memorable Charter School Retreat at your Forest House in Crockett for the TPRI Teacher Training. Eight of the ASK faculty reported it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Thank you for making it possible for the extended staff development and bonding of a wide variety of charter school teachers from across Texas.

MAINLAND PREP Congratulations to Mainland Prep Charter founders Diane Merchant, Wilma Green, and Georgia Lovell who already have an entire group of four-year-olds reading Dr. Suess's Green Eggs and Ham. You are cordially invited to attend their Reading Recital on March 2, 1999 in Texas City. For information call 409-948-3224.

NATIONAL CONFERENCE If you are planning to attend the National Conference in Denver, March 15-17, 1999, please fill out the attached form and fax back to Deborah Havens at 512-463-9732.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION WORKSHOP Thanks to Marsha Sonnenberg and Fort Worth ISD for providing informative Direct Instruction workshops on February 15th for many of our open enrollment charter school teachers.

ROUNDTABLES The Resource Center wishes to thank several charter school leaders for helping us host our well-attended Spoonful of Sugar Roundtables: Don Jones and Joan Sears of Renaissance; Frances Teran and Geri Felios of La Escuela de las Americas; and Dr. Carolyn Black of the University of Houston Charter.
