Alt Ed Accountability

The 2006-2007 alternative education accountability (AEA) campus registration process is open only from September 11 - 22, 2006. Detailed information on the AEA procedures for 2007 and beyond, the 2006-07 AEA campus registration process, alternative education campus (AEC) data, the AEA website, and the at-risk registration criteria can be found at www.tea.state.tx.us/taa/account091106.html.

TEA Charter School Orientation

The Division of Charter Schools at the Texas Education Agency is hosting a two-day charter school orientation on Thursday and Friday, October 5-6, 2006, in room 1-104 of the William B. Travis Building located at 1701 N. Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78701. The program will consist of presentations by staff members from many agency divisions. Administrators of new charter schools are required to attend an orientation. Administrators from existing charter schools who are new or who have not recently attended an orientation session are strongly encouraged to attend. Staff members are also welcome, as are ESC staff and other interested parties. There is no charge for the orientation. Charter School Growth Fund

The Charter School Growth Fund is seeking applicants for its first 2007 business planning cohort. The application will be posted on the Fund’s website: www.chartergrowthfund.org on September 15, 2006. Qualified applicants will need to demonstrate they have run one or more outstanding charter schools, sustained strong achievement gains with underserved youth, and possess the dedication to expand a network of schools in their target communities. The deadline for Part I applications is October 15, 2006.

Bilingual Education Exceptions / Waivers

Districts and charter schools are required to identify students of limited English proficiency (LEP) and serve each student through bilingual education or English as a second language (ESL) programs as described in Chapter 29, Subchapter B of the TEC. Every district and charter school that does not have appropriately certified teachers to serve LEP students with the required program as described in Title 19 TAC, Chapter 89, Subchapter BB, §89.1205, must complete one or both of the TEA forms (as appropriate) as well as the transmittal form for the 2006-2007 school year and return them to TEA by October 1, 2006. A bilingual exception and/or ESL waiver is valid only for the current school year. Governance Reporting Form Deadline

The 2006 Annual Governance Reporting Form for Open Enrollment Charter Schools is now available online at www.tea.state.tx.us/charter/forms/forms.html.
