Responsibilities and Duties:
Routes and
Schedules
- Continually monitor and
update charter bus routes and schedules.
Provide guidelines to meet future transportation needs.
- Provide transportation
for extracurricular activities and special programs.
- Provide after-hours
emergency assistance as needed. If
breakdown occurs, operate bus and deliver buses to driver.
- Notify bus drivers,
schools, and public of any adjustments in bus routes and schedules.
Documentation and Law
- Comply with federal and
state law that apply to charter schools, Commissioner’s Rules that apply
to charter schools, and charter policy in transportation area.
- Gather, manage, file
and present all reports, records and other documents required in
transportation area.
- Comply with charter’s
student discipline policies and advise students of expected behavior when
using charter transportation.

- Implement safety
guidelines that conform to state, federal and insurance regulations and
devise a preventative safety program.
- Ensure exemplary
operation of transportation department through staff development and
improvement plans.
- Abide by applicable
personnel policies.
- Compile necessary
records to process transportation payroll.
Maintenance
- Oversee preventive
maintenance plans and repairs of charter owned vehicles.
- Log and prioritize work
order vehicle repair requests. Seek
outside maintenance when necessary.
- Keep informed on fuel
deliveries and distribution.
Finance
- Document program needs
in order to show budgets and cost estimates.
- Manage transportation
budget and monitor cost effectiveness of program. Evaluate efficiency of fund management.
- Originate purchases and
bids within budget guidelines and charter policy.
- Maintain adequate
inventory of supplies and parts.
- Approve and forward
transportation invoices to the accounting department.
- Propose disposal of
inefficient vehicles and equipment.
Advise on purchasing of vehicles as necessary.
Student Management
- Maintain student
discipline reports and hold conferences with parents, students and drivers
as needed.
- Ensure that student
discipline and suspension of riding privileges are enforced for any
student who does not comply with rules and regulations.
Personnel
- Assign bus drivers to
routes and locate substitute drivers as needed.
- Oversee training,
managing and assessing all transportation personnel and make sound
recommendations about placement, assignment, retention, discipline and
dismissal.
- Record and manage all
records required to verify safety certification and alcohol and drug
testing of bus drivers.
- Draft and revise
transportation department job descriptions.
- Assess employee job
performance to guarantee efficiency.
Safety
- Keep administration
informed about potential weather conditions that may result in the closing
of schools or road hazards.
- Assist in gathering
information for school bus accident investigations and student safety
violations.
- Assist in planning and
implementing a training program to promote a safe work environment.

- Provide for
transportation equipment that is in excellent working condition.
- Assist in disaster duty
as needed (hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, etc.)
Other
- Participate and make
presentations at conferences and school board meetings to discuss
transportation problems and new ideas.
- Participate in
professional growth programs to keep informed of innovative techniques in
transportation.
- Manage good relations
with parents and community.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Oversee and assess the
performance of shop foreman, dispatcher, parts manager, bus drivers,
bus monitors and transportation secretary.
Job Related Conditions:
